Device Watch: setting up

  1. Drag Device Watch onto a key.
  2. In the key's settings, choose the device from the list of connected USB devices (name and VID:PID). If it is missing, plug it in: the list updates.
  3. Optional: a sound on a drop (the Windows warning sound or a short beep; off by default), the look (solid color, dark or light), and a label shown on the key instead of the device name, for example Mic.

A device with a serial number is found on any USB port. A device without one is found again on another port when it is the only one of its model connected, and two of that model have not been connected at the same time since the plugin started; otherwise the key watches the port it was chosen on. After a restart, the key starts again from the port it was chosen on.

What the key shows

KeyMeaning
Green, CONNECTEDThe device is connected.
Red, DISCONNECTED and "… ago"The device dropped; the time since it went.
Amber, DROPPED n× and "last …"The device is back. It dropped n times; the time of the last drop. It stays until you press the key while the device is connected.
Red, NOT WORKING and "code …"The device is connected, but Windows shows it as not working: the code is the one Device Manager shows for it (for example Code 43; Code 22 = disabled), "not started" = Windows has not started it. It counts as a drop.
Red, NOT FOUNDThe chosen device has not been seen connected since the key started watching it (since the plugin started, or since you chose the device).
choose a deviceNo device is chosen yet: open the key's settings.
CAN'T READWindows could not give the USB list. The key keeps what it knew and keeps trying on its own. See the questions below.

Drops are counted from Windows' plug and unplug events, plus a check of the list every 2 s while the key is visible. On a PC where Windows does not send these events, only the 2 s check runs and shorter dropouts are missed; the Status text in the key's settings says which is used. Counts reset when Stream Deck or the plugin restarts. The key texts follow the Stream Deck app's language (English or Japanese).

Last USB Change

Shows the last USB device plugged in or removed (any device), with its name and the time: ADDED or REMOVED, or NOT WORKING when a connected device stopped working. Press the key for the change before (the last 10 are kept; the small number, for example 2/5, shows where you are); hold it for the latest. Only changes while the plugin runs are shown. Useful when Windows plays its USB disconnect sound and you are not sure what it was.

Common questions

The key shows CAN'T READ

The plugin asks Windows for the USB list through Windows PowerShell, which is part of Windows. Security software or a company policy that blocks Windows PowerShell stops it. The Status text in the key's settings shows the reason; send it to us if it is not clear.

I hear no sound when the device drops

The sound is off by default: choose one in the key's settings. The Windows warning sound follows your Windows sound scheme, so it is silent when the scheme is "No Sounds"; choose Short beep then. Both play on your default speakers or headphones: if those are the device that dropped, you will not hear it there. At most one sound per device plays within 1.5 s.

My microphone went silent but the key stays green

The plugin watches the USB connection, not the sound. A microphone that is still connected but muted or silent stays green.

Does it work with Bluetooth devices?

No. USB receivers (for example a wireless headset's USB dongle) are covered; Bluetooth devices are not.

I have two identical devices

Devices with a serial number are told apart on any port. Two identical devices without a serial number are told apart by their port: the key watches the port it was chosen on.

The name on the key is odd

The name is what the device reports to Windows. Type a label in the key's settings to rename the key.

Does it change or turn off my devices?

No. It only reads the list of connected devices. It needs no administrator rights.

Mac?

No. The plugin is for Windows 10 and 11 only.

Privacy

The plugin sends nothing anywhere. See the Privacy Policy.
