Ideas and bug reports
Email contact@gramshift.com in English or Japanese. Ideas for new grids and anything else are welcome, and every message is read; we do not guarantee a reply time. For a bug, please include your Windows version (Settings > System > About), your Stream Deck app version and model, the programs involved, and a screenshot of the key's settings page (its Status line says what the last press did).
Get started
- In the Stream Deck app, find Window Layout Keys for Windows in the action list.
- Save & Restore Layout: drag it onto a key. Arrange your windows the way you like them and press the key once: it saves where your windows are. From then on, a press puts them back. To save again, hold the key for 2 seconds and release it (a shorter press puts the windows back and keeps the saved layout).
- Tile Windows: drag it onto a key and press it. The windows of the screen you are working on line up in a grid. Press it again and the windows go back to where they were before.
Save & Restore Layout
- A save keeps, for every open window (up to 60): which program it belongs to, its title, its screen, its position and size, and whether it is maximized or minimized. Each key keeps its own layout, so you can have one for writing, one for a stream and one for a meeting. Copy a key to copy its layout.
- A press puts the saved windows that are open now back in place, maximized and minimized windows included. The key shows how many went back, for example
6/8, and 2 not open for the saved windows that are not open now; they are skipped and come back on a later press once they are open.
- Windows are matched by program. The very window that was saved goes first, then a window of the same program with the same title, then the other windows of that program in order. So a program that was closed and opened again is found, and when one saved window of a program was closed, another window of that program (also one opened after saving) can take its place. Windows of Store apps are matched by their title only.
- Windows of programs that are not in the layout stay where they are.
- If a saved screen is not connected, the plugin puts its windows on a screen that is connected, inside that screen.
- The key shows a small map of the saved windows (the open ones bright) with the Map look, or the numbers with the other looks. Name sets the word on top of the key.
Tile Windows
- Grid: Automatic (2 side by side, 3 as columns on a very wide screen or as 1 large + 2, 4 as 2 x 2, up to 6 as 3 x 2, up to 9 as 3 x 3), or a fixed 2 side by side, 2 stacked, 3 columns, 1 large + 2, 2 x 2, 3 x 2 or 3 x 3. With more windows than cells, the windows nearest the front are tiled.
- Screen: the screen of the window in front, or a screen you choose. Gap: none, small or large space between the windows.
- The window in front picks first, and each window takes the free cell nearest to where it is, so windows tend to move little. When it sizes a window, the plugin allows for the invisible border that Windows 10 and 11 put around windows, so that the visible frames line up with the cells; a program that draws its own frame may sit a little differently. Maximized windows are tiled too; minimized windows stay minimized; windows of a fixed size are left out.
- While the tile can be undone, the key turns green and says
UNDO. A press puts the tiled windows back to their position, size and maximized state from before. If you moved some of them after tiling, the key says how many (1 moved since), and the press puts those back too.
- Several Tile Windows keys with different grids work together: pressing another one arranges the same windows in its grid and keeps the places from before the first tile, so one undo goes all the way back.
- The places from before are kept until you undo, also when the Stream Deck app is restarted, as long as the windows are still open.
Looks
Each key has a Look: Map (a small drawing of the saved windows or of the grid), Classic (words on dark gray), Neon (bright lines on black) and Solid (words on a bright color).
Limits
- A window of a program that runs as administrator may refuse to be moved. It then stays where it is, and the key counts it (the settings page says so).
- Some programs keep a minimum size of their own. Such a window moves to its place but stays larger than the cell or the saved size; the key counts it as
not exact.
- Windows on other virtual desktops are not saved, tiled or moved.
- A window whose program does not answer is not moved; press again once the program responds.
Privacy
The plugin reads where your windows are and their titles only on your PC. A saved layout is kept in the key's settings by the Stream Deck app on your PC. Nothing is sent anywhere. Full details: Privacy Policy.
Troubleshooting
| The key shows | What it means |
HOLD / to save | Nothing is saved on this key yet. Press it to save where your windows are now. |
SAVE? / release to save | You are holding the key: release it to save the windows as they are now (the old layout is replaced). |
6/8 and 2 not open | Six saved windows went back; two are not open now and were skipped. |
not exact (amber frame) | Some windows did not land on their saved place or cell: the program keeps its own size, runs as administrator, or did not answer. The settings page says which. |
UNDO (green) | A tile made by this key can be undone with a press. |
no windows | There is no window to tile on that screen (minimized windows and windows of a fixed size are left out). |
-- / not connected | The screen chosen in the settings is not connected now. Choose another screen, or the screen of the window in front. |
Compatibility
Windows 10 or later (tested on Windows 11), Stream Deck 6.9 or later. Works on keys.
