Getting started

1. Install the plugin from the Elgato Marketplace.
2. In the Stream Deck app, find Color Picker for Windows in the action list and drag Pick Color onto a key.
3. Select the key to choose the format: HEX (#RRGGBB), rgb(r, g, b), hsl(h, s%, l%) or plain r, g, b. Settings are saved as soon as you change them.
4. Point your mouse at any color on your screen and press the key. The value is copied to your clipboard, and the key shows the color with the value on it.
5. Optional: tick Preview to see the color under your mouse on the key before you press it.

Tip: put several Pick Color keys side by side with different formats, for example one for HEX and one for rgb().

Last Color: copy the same color in another format

1. Drag Last Color onto a key and choose its format, for example rgb(r, g, b). You can add several Last Color keys with different formats.
2. Pick a color with any Pick Color key. Every Last Color key now shows that color, with the value written in its own format.
3. Press a Last Color key to copy that color again in its format. It does not read the screen again, so you can move the mouse away first.

Before your first pick, a Last Color key shows — (“nothing yet”), and pressing it only shows a warning triangle. The last color is kept in memory only, so it is gone after the Stream Deck app or your PC restarts.

Common questions

The first press takes a few seconds.
The plugin starts a small helper when a Pick Color or Last Color key appears. On a busy PC this can take a few seconds; later presses are instant.

The key shows a warning triangle when I press it.
The plugin reads the screen and sets the clipboard through Windows PowerShell, which is included with Windows. If PowerShell is blocked or removed on your PC (for example by a company policy), picking cannot work. It can also happen when another program keeps the clipboard busy, or when Windows shows a protected screen (sign-in, lock screen or a UAC prompt). Press again once that is gone. On a Last Color key, the triangle also appears when nothing has been picked yet.

The color is slightly different from the app's own color value.
The plugin reads the color that is actually on your screen. Apps that use color management, HDR, transparency or smoothing can show a slightly different color than the value they store.

Some windows read as black.
Some video players and protected content block screen reading. The plugin cannot read those pixels.

How does it handle display scaling?
The plugin reads the screen as a per-monitor DPI aware program, in physical screen pixels. If the picked color does not match what you see under the pointer, please email us your display settings (scaling and monitor layout) so we can look into it.

Does Preview slow my PC down?
Preview reads one pixel up to 4 times per second, only while a key with Preview on is visible on your Stream Deck. Turn it off in the key settings if you do not need it.

Does it work on Mac?
No. This plugin is for Windows 10 (version 1703) or later only.
