MIXED and a press makes both dark.| Key | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Green frame | The setting is on: dark mode, auto-hide on, icons shown, hidden files / extensions shown, or Clean Desktop on. |
Gray, MIXED | The two parts of the key differ (apps and Windows, or hidden files and extensions). The bottom line says what a press does. |
Red, FAILED, "not changed" | Windows refused the change. Nothing was changed. After a few seconds the key shows the state Windows reports. |
Red, PARTIAL, "partly done" | Windows took the first part of the change and refused the rest (for example Clean Desktop hid the taskbar but not the icons). After a few seconds the key shows the state Windows reports; press again or check the setting in Windows. |
Red, FAILED, "not applied" | Windows accepted the change, but reports another state right after it. Usually a policy of your organization or another program sets the value back. |
Red, --, "not readable" | Windows did not report the setting (for example File Explorer is restarting). The plugin shows no state rather than a wrong one. |
Red, --, "reinstall plugin" | The plugin could not load its Windows part. Remove the plugin in the Stream Deck app and install it again from the Elgato Marketplace. |
Some apps stay light (or dark).
Dark Mode changes the Windows setting. Apps that follow Windows switch with it; apps with their own theme setting (many browsers, editors and office apps can be set this way) keep their own choice. Set them to follow the system theme.
Where are these settings in Windows?
Dark mode: Settings > Personalization > Colors. Taskbar: Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors. Desktop icons: right-click the desktop > View > Show desktop icons. Hidden files and extensions: File Explorer > View > Show. The plugin changes the same settings and Windows shows the new state there.
Does Clean Desktop delete or move my files?
No. It only hides the icons; the files stay on the desktop. A second press shows them again.
Does Clean Desktop remember after a restart?
Usually, yes. What it hid is saved in the plugin's settings, so a press after restarting the PC or the Stream Deck app puts the desktop back. If the Stream Deck app closes at the very moment of the press, that save can be lost; then show the icons and the taskbar again with the Desktop Icons and Taskbar Auto-Hide keys, or in Windows Settings.
I changed the taskbar while Clean Desktop was on.
The second press of Clean Desktop puts back the state from before its first press, so a change you made in between is undone. Press Taskbar Auto-Hide or Desktop Icons again afterwards if you want to keep it.
How does Desktop Icons work?
It sends File Explorer the same command as right-click > View > Show desktop icons. This command is not documented by Microsoft, so a future Windows update could change it; the key then shows FAILED instead of a wrong state.
Does it show protected operating system files?
No. Hidden Files & Extensions changes "Hidden items" and "File name extensions" only.
My organization manages these settings.
If a policy sets a value, Windows may refuse the change or set it back; the key then shows FAILED.
Does it work on Mac?
No. This plugin is for Windows 10 and 11 only.
The plugin runs entirely on your PC and sends no data anywhere. See the Privacy Policy.
